Rio Rancho orders boil water alert

The City of Rio Rancho has ordered a precautionary boil water advisory for all water users who lost service as a result of the water main break near Unser Blvd. and Northern.

While water service was restored Thursday afternoon around 2 p.m., the city is asking that people boil any tap water that is to be consumed for 24 hours following the restoration.

About 400 customers lost service after the water main break.

The city said that while all safety procedures have been taken by crews while repairing the water main break and restoring water service, the precautionary advisory has been issued until bacteriological tests confirm that the water is safe to drink.

New tech innovation makes movies better for hearing impaired

You might see a lot more people putting on special glasses inside some Albuquerque movie theaters. It's all about enhancing the experience, but it has nothing to do with 3-D.

KOB Eyewitness News 4 spoke with moviegoers who said to truly experience a movie, you've got to see it on the big screen. The giant wall of pictures mixed with the sound that shakes you in your seat.

Until recently, for the hearing impaired, watching on the small screen with captions was the only way to understand dialogue. Now with the help of SONY Entertainment Access Glasses, the hearing impaired can get a fuller cinematic experience.

Albuquerque's aquifer recharging

Good news for Albuquerque. The city’s vast underground water, the aquifer, supply is making a comeback. It's actually growing in a time of severe drought.

Three reasons for the turnaround: conservation, re-use, and surface water flowing in through a big muddy open pipe they call the Rio Grande.

It’s that San Juan-Chama water that gets diverted into the Rio Grande, then treated and cleaned up and pumped into Albuquerque’s water system. During the drought the city-county Water Authority goes back to pumping groundwater in the hot months, but the aquifer is still recharging.

“We’re starting to see the aquifer begin to come back,” said Water Authority chief John Stomp. “ It was dropping two to five feet a year in some places, and it’s starting to come back up. We’re still trying to protect the aquifer for the long term.”
