'Diet' plan proposed for Central Ave.

The City of Albuquerque is working on a traffic improvement plan for Central Avenue between 8th and 47th streets.

The area most impacted would be from 8th to Rio Grande Blvd. where the city plans to implement a “road diet” which is transportation lingo for reducing the number of lanes.

Currently, the road is four lanes but under the plan it would be reduced to two lanes, one lane in each direction.

The plan also calls for more on-street parking and wider sidewalks.

Acting Municipal Development Director Michael Riordan says, “If you talk to some pedestrians, they’re not comfortable walking along that stretch of the roadway, if you talk to business owners there’s not enough on-street parking to service businesses and really develop the area economically.”

Event helps families in need

Times are tough, and many New Mexico families can use some help.  That's why PNM is hosting a one-day event that includes more than two dozen agencies.

If you need help with food, transportation, home repairs, discounts on your utility bills and especially medical care the event could help you.  All you have to do is bring some documents with you. This includes proof of income for the household, Social Security cards, your highest electric or gas bill, and any receipts for wood and propane.   If you have a utility disconnect notice, bring that too.

You also need identification for anyone in your home and anything that helps show proof hardship for your family.

The one-day event is Wednesday, October 27, from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the Wells Park Community Center on Mountain Road at 5th Street NW.

Website addresses Lead, Coal concerns

The major construction project on Lead and Coal is slated to begin on Monday and when it does, it's going to be a difficult situation for drivers, businesses, and residents in the area for at least the next 18 months.

Two weeks ago, Fatima Tannagda thought it was a good idea to open her new beauty salon and shop on Lead. The sounds from a steady stream of traffic were reassuring, but she worries the construction will change that.

"I just heard a rumor this street is going to be shut down," said Tannagda, the owner of Oasis. "There should have been something that politicians or the city should have made it open information," she adds.

The city's spokesman Chris Ramirez explained that there were information sessions.
