City of Santa Fe to unveil new water conservation website

It’s not exactly a news flash: New Mexico is hot and dry. But since 2012 was about the hottest and driest year in recorded history, the City of Santa Fe Water Conservation Office has launched a new user-friendly water conservation website to help customers preserve Santa Fe’s limited water supply and save money on bills.

The new site has features to make searching, site navigation, and mobile browsing easy.

Text4baby helping expectant families

A new program in partnership with the New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) gives pregnant and parenting people the chance to learn about development as their child grows.

All that’s required is a text of “BABY” or “BEBE” in Spanish to 511411 and families will receive three texts a week up until the baby’s first birthday. Mothers who use the program are three times more likely to report feeling prepared for child-rearing than those mothers who were not enrolled in the program. It’s also proven to facilitate interaction with doctors, increase health knowledge and improve appointment and immunization adherence.

New Mexico is participating in a competition between states to enroll the most women in the text4baby program. The state with the highest percentage of participants will be recognized at the American Public Health Association Annual Meeting in Boston, Mass. early November.

Homeless vets proud of service

As we pause to honor those who’ve died while serving our country, we don’t want to forget about those who are still living.

The number of homeless veterans in Albuquerque varies. Some organizations report 200; others estimate there are 750 homeless veterans in Albuquerque on any given day.

William Roper spent Memorial Day outside with his family, but amid the laughter, he reflects on the meaning of this holiday.

“It's real hard especially when you got to look back and you see friends, comrades in arms, you see them fall every day," said Roper wiping away tears.

Roper is an Army veteran. He says he was deployed several times, including to Iraq in 2003. He then came home and got a job.

"Being new on the roster, I was one of the ones who got cut and it's been impossible to find a job since," he said.

And that has led him, his wife and their four kids to Joy Junction.

Albuquerque recognizes veterans this Memorial Day

Today people all over the country are taking time to remember the fallen, the reason we celebrate Memorial Day.  At the Veteran's Memorial in Albuquerque the celebration wasn't about who was there. It was about honoring those who weren't.

Air Force Captain Jeremy Fresques of Farmington died serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Army Sergeant Brian Pedro and Corporal Nathan Carse lost their lives in separate insurgency attacks in Afghanistan's Kandahar Province. Both were based out of White Sands. Carse's mother, Janis, came all the way from Lima, Ohio to honor him.

"This has been the most meaningful ceremony that we've been to. It just means a lot he was of course based at White Sands, so that's why he definitely has a New Mexico connection here."
