Urban Olympics draws dozens of working professionals

Albuquerque professionals had their own fun with relays and games Downtown as part of the 4th Annual Urban Olympics.

Among myriad events, people competed in the javelin throw, but they used mops instead of javelins.

Teams also dressed in costumes in the hopes of winning the costume contest.

“Kind of a carnival atmosphere, it's a lot of fun. A good way to blow off some steam,” competitor Jennifer Foote said.

The Urban Olympics is an annual fundraiser for Amy Biehl High School.

The money raised goes directly to programs to help students prepare for college.

Man pays back restaurant owner's good deed years later

It has been said that the best deeds or gifts are the ones given without agendas or ulterior motives.

When a local restaurant owner opened up his wallet 16 years ago to help out a young patron. He never expected anything in return, but what happened last week left him stunned.

Claus Hjortkjaer owns Le Cafe Miche in downtown Albuquerque. He's spent years in the restaurant business. But it's Valentine's Day 16 years ago that really stands out to him.

A young man was celebrating over a fancy French meal with his sweetheart, but when the bill came, it was more than he had to spend. He asked to speak to the owner Hjortkjaer.

"I'm a little surprised he just didn't run out of the restaurant like some teenagers actually does these days," Hjortkjaer said.

Hjortkjaer said he felt for the young guy. So, to save him the emberassment, he pulled out $40.

Celebrate National Public Gardens Day in ABQ

The ABQ BioPark Botanic Garden will celebrate National Public Gardens Day Friday, May 10, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The celebration invites nature lovers to go out to the gardens and join the fun. There will be demonstrations, giveaways and special talks about gardening. The celebration is a perfect opportunity to kick off your summertime planting.

Prices are included with admission to the BioPark.

Albuquerque zoo holds contest to name giraffe calf

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - The Rio Grande Zoo is looking for help in naming its newest giraffe calf.
    
Zookeepers have narrowed down the list of names to four - Abiquiu or Abi for short, Gisele, Mari and Nancy. Voting takes place on the ABQ BioPark's Facebook page.
    
The female calf was born April 20, weighing in at 120 pounds and measuring almost 6 feet tall.
    
The zoo says it also plans to hold a naming contest for a baby orangutan.

City considering adding parklets

Run for the Zoo sold out

This year's Run for the Zoo is sold out.

Organizers say around 12,000 people will lace up their running shoes Sunday morning for the event.

That means many streets will be closed near the Zoo

The Run for the Zoo is the largest fundraising event for the Biopark.

All proceeds go to the zoo, aquarium, botanic garden and Tingley Beach.

Work finally underway at the Anasazi

The Anasazi building has been an eyesore downtown sitting unfinished at the corner of 6th St. and Central for years.

But progress is already underway as an Arizona real estate company is leasing out the bottom level for retail.

Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry tells says his office has gotten a lot of calls from people about why the building has sat unfinished, but now he says he’s getting calls from people happy to see work is finally being done.
