Two local restaurants recognized for best Mexican food

Two of New Mexico’s restaurants have been named as having some of the best Mexican food in the whole country.

Travel and Leisure magazine named Albuquerque’s El Modelo as one of the top 32 Mexican restaurants. The magazine noted the restaurant's tortillas and tamales as some of the best.

The restaurant on second near bridge has been around since 1929.

“I would venture to say there's probably very few establishments that went through the great depression and are still here today. So to be recognized on a national level is quite an honor,” Virginia Chittim said.

Santa Fe restaurant The Shed also made the list.

VA gets cash through online donations

The New Mexico VA Health Care System (NMVAHCS) has announced a new way for supporters to donate.

The electronic donation option is up and running at www.albuquerque.va.gov. The new system lets donators give to programs helping to improve veterans’ lives. Donators also get to decide which medical center their donations will go to. 100 percent of donations will go to the causes donators select.

Voluntary Service and Public Affairs Operations Chief, Sonja Brown said the VA uses every donation dollar they get on making sure veterans are comfortable.

“Donated money at our medical center provides for many programs to include recreational activities for both inpatient and outpatient veterans, comfort items to newly admitted inpatients, and emergency funding for veterans,” she said.  “Every donation truly makes a difference in the lives of our veterans.”
